Duet with Music Private Instructor
David Lester
Currently instructing: Drum Set - Snare Drum - Electric Bass - String Bass - Percussion - Music Theory
David LesterMy musical training and experience are wide and varied.  Having grown up in a family of professional musicians, I was immersed in classical music from a young age.  During middle school I ventured into rock music, which prompted me to take up the drums, which I studied, along with guitar and bass guitar, with Matt Thompson throughout middle school and high school.  During this period, I became influenced by artists such as the Beatles, Tool, Led Zeppelin, Frank Zappa, Parliament/Funkadelic, John Coltrane, as well as many other styles.  My growing interest in jazz inspired me to pick up the upright bass, which I studied with Juilliard graduate Lynn Fleming until 2007, and currently study with Jeffrey Weisner of the National Symphony Orchestra and the Peabody Institute.  My love of the upright bass and its capabilities as a lyrical instrument led me full-circle back to classical music, and I developed a love for orchestral repertoire and composers such as Stravinsky, Shostakovich and Beethoven.  I graduated from Hood College in 2010, where I studied bass, music history, theory, and composition.
While playing bass in the Frederick High jazz band, I received the “outstanding soloist” medal at Music in the Parks in Williamsburg, Va., where I was singled out from 33 bands representing 11 states.  I have played bass and drums in local bands around Frederick and Baltimore since high school,  and I currently play bass for two local Frederick bands, Major Kahn and the Nuclear Organ and Carousel Rogues.  I also play bass in various jazz combos, and in the Frederick Symphony Orchestra.
